Many reviewers have very adequately expressed the numerous reasons this fine commentary is exceptional. I say "amen" and then some! I believe this book would be a tremendous blessing to those who wish to seriously study The Word, perhaps even for the first time. I would like to say this book has helped me become an enthusiastic, joyful Bible student despite several obstacles.Because of health problems I am unable to attend Bible study classes now and for the foreseeable future. Frankly Ihad become somewhat discouraged attempting to study on my own. I needed help understanding certain passages. Actually, I hardly ever read the Old Testament on my own. Often I did not understand the context or significance of certain OT stories. Because I didn't grow up in a Bible reading church tradition (shocking now!) I didn't know those stories. There were huge gaps in my knowledge of the Bible. Things have certainly changed since someone recommended John MacArthur's ministry and his books. I would like to add my heartiest encouragement to anyone out there who is struggling to play "catch up" with Bible study and perhaps feels less than adequate for the task. Dr. MacArthur's Bible Commentary (MBC) is almost like having a knowledgeable, patient Theology professor of the highest caliber, readily available to not only answer your questions--but also to anticipate the areas where you will need additional help. The commentary, maps and charts provide meaningful insight into Scripture and will spark many enjoyable sessions. There are times when finally understanding a certain passage, I feel as if I have been given a precious gift. At least that has been my experience. I am very grateful for Dr. MacArthur's ministry and work. This MBC has more than exceeded my expectations and has helped me to enjoy Bible Study as never before. For the first time since I became disabled, I am no longer discouraged about missing group Bible study and enjoy the blessings of time spent gaining much-needed knowledge. I pray this book will encourage others to give this fine book a place right next to your Bible. My only regret is that I didn't discover this book sooner.
Generally speaking, I really like MacArthur's preaching and this is why I ordered this commentary. However, I have been underwhelmed time and time again in its depth and/or skirting past sensitive issues - one of the main reasons commentaries are sought. The shallow explanations is probably due the fact an entire bible commentary is just too much for one person. Perhaps MacArthur had a staff assemble this thick book. If so, I missed it when looking for the credits (there basically aren't any). I truly think more condensed commentaries are deeper and the best, i.e. one devoted to only the Book of John, or perhaps all four Gospels, etc. If you are looking for an entire bible commentary, my preference is The Moody Bible Commentary, which is a team effort from around 30 faculty members at The Moody Bible Institute (also credited that way) and took seven years to assemble.
I love MacArthur's products but this commentary was not very in depth. I have rented another MacArthur commentary from my church library which was much more in depth. I thought that is what I was getting when I purchased it. This is not that much more than the notes contained in the MacArthur study Bible that my wife has.
This is a great bible commentary though I recommend you stay far away from the Kindle Edition. In print it is wonderful and I like MacArthur's approach to the bible. The issue with the Kindle Edition as can be seen in the reviews below is the navigation is terrible. If you want to go to a specific verse the quickest way I found is to go to the table of contents, pick the book, navigate to the outline of said book, and pick a highlight that takes you somewhat close. Some books, like psalms, don't even have an outline so prepare to spend five minutes turning pages or guessing the correct location to find what you want. My other issue with the kindle edition is the maps are all blurry. They must be in a low resolution or something but take for example Solomon's 12 Districts... the map is completely unreadable on all kindle devices and apps (I've tried them all). In short, buy the physical version of this commentary as it is really good but stay away from this Kindle Edition. I've reported the blurry maps to Amazon but who knows if they will ever be fixed.

Premillennial (Jesus will return before the LITERAL 1,000 year Reign of Jesus Christ on Earth)II. Dispensational (God operates differently with man throughout time e.g. sacrifices - no sacrifices)III. Calvinistic (God controls salvation not man)IV. Pre Wrath Rapture (Gods chosen people will be removed before the wrath of God is unveiled against mankind)V. Cessationist (The "Biblically Proportional" charismatic gifts are no longer in function as they were used to establish the church in the book of Acts - Miracles do happen, but not in the same scale as the apostolic office has been closed.)VI. Trinity - God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit all comprise God. Tri (Three) Un (United). Though God is One he exists in three persons. Not three separate Gods, but, 1 God in Three individual Persons (Father, Son and Holy Spirit).
The amount of content in this commentary is incredible. I have found John MacArthur to be a wonderful resource for studying the Bible. The only thing to be aware of is much of what is found in MacArthur's study Bible (at least the NIV version that I own) is the same as what is in this book. There is additional content in this commentary because it is more extensive so it has still proven useful but if you own a MacArthur study Bible, I would probably not purchase this.
