Some sections were good but overall the book does not deliver. The translation from German to English is one thing but referring to components to be used with Firemonkey is dumb, what happens if someone cannot afford the components needed for the demos. The books should have been about using FMX and what is provided to you and NOT what you can purchase to make the demos work. The price is outrageous for a printed book and does not compare well with Delphi Cookbook which is much better.
This book contains tips, tricks, and workarounds for building cross platform apps for Windows and Mac OSX using Delphi XE7. Additionally, it describes the differences between the VCL framework and the FMX framework. The book is originally written in German and it shows but at the same time it is still easy to understand. This book is not about compilers and obscure language features. This book is geared towards Windows developers beginning cross platform development on the Mac using the single code base provided by Firemonkey. The book contains a lot of real world tips and tricks that the author learned converting VCL applications to Firemonkey. The sample source code in the book alone is worth the money because it gets you that much closer to having a finished and polished product on Windows and Mac. Even if it only saves you a few hours worth of time it pays for itself.
Hesitant to purchase due to the negative reviews, I am glad I bought this book. People seem to mostly complain about the writing style, etc. rather than the content. The content is very useful and indispensable for folks experienced with VCL and wanting to use Firemonkey for desktop applications. Sure there are errors here and there but nothing one cannot easily figure out. People new to Delphi would have trouble with this book and should start off with Marco Cantu's Object Pascal handbook and Chris Rolliston's Delphi XE2 foundations followed by Nick Hodge's Coding in Delphi and More Coding in Delphi. The writing style is the result of German-to-English translation by the author who is not a native English speaker. I suggest reading around Embarcadero's Wicki to get an appreciation of having the content presented in one place as in this book. Last but not least, the author is very friendly and open to suggestions for topics to include (e.g. Styles play a very important role in Firemonkey and would deserve a chapter).
Anyone who has spent anytime at all attempting to develop cross-platform FMX apps will discover the same things that Harry Stahl did - with time. There are an equal number of neat tricks and tips I could add, so it's not a definitive guide either. Read it with that in mind, and you won't be disappointed.
This book has potential however, it seems that the English grammar it a direct translation of German to English through an automated translator program. There are many orthographical and grammatical errors that alter the meaning of what the author is trying to say making this book confusing to read. I consider this book as a version 0.1 for the English version that needs a complete revision before it reaches the version 1.0 good for first publication.
I've been coding in Delphi for almost 20 years and I've read over a dozen of books on this topic. Unfortunately, that's the worst book on programming I've ever read. The coverage is extremely limited. If you are a beginner, it won't help you get started with Delphi in general or Firemonekey in particular. If you are a pro, you already know everything that was written in this book. What makes things even worse is the language. I'm not a native English speaker, so I'm totally tolerant of imperfect English grammar, misspellings, or an omitted "a" or "the" here and there, but the author went way beyond any limits. Quite frequently, I had to read a sentence several times before I could understand what the author had meant. The book was never proof-read or edited. In fact, it looks like it wasn't even spell-checked.Finally, the price... I'm not a poor guy, $30 is something I don't care much about if the book is good or even mediocre. After all, it takes a lot of time and effort to write virtually any book, and I don't see a problem with compensating the author for his efforts. However, in this particular case, I feel that I've been ripped off. Yes, sorry for being so direct. It's not that I miss my $30; rather, I regret that the author received my $30 (or a portion of it) for this work.
Admittedly, there are some very useful nuggets in this book. However, I have to agree with an earlier reviewer: this is almost painful to read at times. (The author mentions that German is his first, and the book's original, language.) It might be worth $10 (maybe even $20); not $50!
