I am a first year medical student and find that this is a great tool to use when for studying for practicals. For me, the two best features are:-The lines that point to structures only have numbers on them, with a small area of the page that says what those numbers correspond to. This makes it very easy to test yourself. The downside to this is that if it is your first exposure to the structures you're looking at, you'll be constantly looking at numbers and finding the corresponding name, which isn't as quick & easy as if the lines were labeled with the name of the structure. However, this is also why it's good to have some familiarity with the structures before using this book by, say, studying the first time with a regular anatomy book.-This being photographs of real bodies means that you see all of the tissue types in every image, and they are well labeled. I find it easier to remember what nerve or artery supplies a given muscle if I can see them both at the same time, which many regular texts don't do, at least not often enough. As another reviewer noted and as I have alluded to, this should be used in conjunction with another anatomy book. Use a standard one to learn the structures and concepts, and then use this one to help you identify it on a real cadaver. Plus, it's always good to see things more than once. I use the Thieme Atlas of Anatomy as my primary atlas and love it. It's a relative newcomer, so you don't hear about it as often as the established giants like Netter and Grant's, but I think it's superior to either of them. The art work is incredible (better than Netter) and it includes some occasional extras peppered throughout, like small radiographs and sidenotes. This is not a waste of money only to be purchased if you don't go to lab. The reality is that this book would be a waste of money if I had a labeled cadaver at home, at the cafe, in the little Chinese restaurant down the street, on the bus -- everywhere I can take this book to study. And speaking of labs, this book is very handy to have in the lab during dissection, as it is so well labeled and depicts images of exactly what you are doing.Don't make this your only anatomy text. If you are in an undergraduate level course with no cadavers, this is probably overkill; just get Thieme or something. But if you're using cadavers and especially if you're being tested using labeled cadavers, you should definitely buy this book.
If you're in gross anatomy and want the ability to see perfectly dissected cadavers with labels on EVERYTHING, this is the book you need. I used this as my lab away from lab when I couldn't spend hours and hours in the cadaver lab at school, I still had this book as the perfect companion to the course. I dont think any student taking gross anatomy for a med program, PA school, nursing school, or any other anatomy course could deny how amazing this book is for reference. I bought it so I can always have it available. If I decide to go into a surgical specialty this could be a great tool to have in my kit.
This text is a great resource for students in the medical profession as they go through anatomy in the cadaver labs. The pictures provided are of great quality and the reader is provided with numerous views of the body and the associated anatomical parts/structures. A nice feature of this book is that the tagged structures are usually tagged with the same identification number throughout the course of several photos so that the reader does not have to keep checking the key.As the student goes through the cadaver labs, as compared to studying this book, it is important that students using this text remember that the likelihood of their cadavers ending up as clean and neatly cut as the cadavers in the book pictures is very small. However, the book is still an essential resource in helping the student develop a picture of each structure and its orientation in their mind before they go to find it in the provided cadaver. Also, when the student is studying on their own, away from the cadaver, this text is a useful reminder of how the structure actually looks in the cadaver. As an example, an upperclassman in my program was a commuter and used this book as her study tool since she was unable to stay after class in the lab to study (She spoke quite highly this text in that regard).Definitely an essential reading/resource/tool for anatomy/cadaver labs in professional schools and undergraduate programs alike.
Normally I don't write reviews but this time I decided to do so. I'm doing a Certificate if Health Science (Intermediate level) and just curious about biology, anatomy and zoology. I have a big heavy detailed 1000+ pages book on A&P which is probably good for students of medical universities but too detailed for me. I started to search for a more comprehensive A&P book and found this atlas. It `s simply brilliant. Photos are in a very good quality and show all organs very clearly and actually you feel like being in a real med lab.You can see all organs in their original proportions and positions/locations in the body. I showed it to my friend doctors and people who are advanced in a human anatomy and they were impressed as well. They say that it's a precise and very informative atlas and can be used as a reference as well. I recommend this book to med student and doctors who don't have a facility to go to med lab or have a limited access and to everyone who are interested in a subject. I found comparing drawn pictures from A&P textbooks with photos from the Atlas very useful and it help me to learn the subject and pass exams. Big THANKS to the authors for the great job they done!
I am a first year medical student and this is the only book I use in my anatomy class. We are doing a full human body dissection and half of our grade is practical testing with structures tagged on 22 different cadavers. This book is great because it labels structures on real cadavers. I am more than happy with this purchase and highly suggest this book to any person dissecting a human body (serial killers not included).
