This is a fictional account of the real Macbeth, King of the Scots and his wife, definitely not the ones Shakespeare created for dramatic effect. Told from the first person (Lady Macbeth’s is the only point of view), it is set, as it must be, in 11th century Scotland when warlords vied for control of the Scottish throne.Lady Gruadh, called Rue (for the sorrow she had experienced), is the last female descendant of Scotland’s most royal line (several families had royal blood). As a young teen, she is married to a powerful northern lord and then widowed while carrying his child. The man who slayed her husband, Macbeth, mormaer of Moray, forces her to marry him, both to protect her and to gain her royal blood.Rue grudgingly accepts the forced marriage but then comes to respect the man she once despised, and realizes he has a chance to reign as King of the Scots. Macbeth has the wisdom and skill to unite the Scots, and he is popular among the people, but Rue’s royal lineage will guarantee him the throne.Determined to protect her son and her husband, Rue seeks out the ancient wisdom and secret practices and the story contains the magic she adds to her Christian faith. It is difficult to see which she believes in more.Steeped in deep research, the author deftly weaves in actual historical events. The novel will transport you back in time. The pace is slow but the story well told and held my interest. What is lacking is any passion between Macbeth and Rue. Alas, we had to settle for respect in their tepid relationship. Still, if you love historical fiction I do recommend it.

"If you would kiss for luck under a new moon, choose carefully. Luck can open the door to fate." -MacbethSusan Fraser King's "Lady Macbeth" is wonderfully written. Engrossing. King masterfully turned historically known facts and knowledge from old scriptures into a captivating story. The fact that she wrote the novel in the first person and found the perfect balance between emotional and factual narration, had me to become more and more emotionally attached to the characters by each turn of a page. So, eventually, and by the time Macbeth is sailing to Scone I was a sobbing mess."Beware, lady," Macbeth murmured. "Sometimes an unassuming warrior can move swiftly to possess a queen." (Macbeth and Lady Gruadh playing chess)Throughout the story, especially scenes involving Gruadh and Macbeth, King uses plenty of analogies and presages which is in wonderful harmony with the Celtic way of life. I applaud King for resisting the temptation to linger with outdrawn or overly colorful and emotional descriptions of scenery, events or interpersonal situations. It leaves -just so- enough room for the reader to personally "feel" the moment without her "telling you" what to feel.I love how King tried to stay as close as possible to the true historical events yet somehow she was able to tell an engaging, emotionally charged true story. Brilliantly executed."For brave Macbeth -- well he deserves that name ..." -Shakespeare (act 1, scene 1)

Lady Macbeth held on to her position by making shrewd decisions and taking chances Ladies of the time were not accustomed to resorting to to keep their Royal husband in power I found it to be a delightful, but sometimes dramatic look at what it took to keep one's family in relative comfort while the "wolves howled at the doors" so to speak. Lady Macbeth deftly handles her man, children, staff, friends and enemies with grace and finesse, often under fire from other factions of the family seeking political power or positions of importance to the King. It is a book that will give you a new insight into the play by Shakespeare, as you now know "what really went on" behind the scenes. i loved it. It literally brought Lady Macbeth to life for me and her daily hard-scrabble efforts to maintain a household whilst ensuring her Royal husband would live to see another sunrise through the ancient neural net of human intelligence at the time. Brilliantly written, it will keep you engaged until the bitter end.

truly enjoyed this book. I purchased this right after reading the book about the live of Queen Margaret of the Scots, by this same author; both were just excellent. I got to understand both of these women who because of the men they married, and the time period; very little had been written of their lives..but they had a strong place in history and both of these books were just excellent. Don't pass them by, especially if you too are proud of the Scots blood flowing in your own veins. I know I am! I will be watching for further books from this talented author.

Chosen on a curious whim.....Author succeeded in filling in the blanks of known history, thoughtfully, and respectfully. Her characters are well described, and in my opinion, fit beautifully with the historical same. She gave them life!....each page made me eager for the next!I would encourage any young woman, or of any age to read....you will experience any number of emotions we all feel at one time or another. ..Quote:..".this is the way of things"
