This book had a few decent tips. That's the best thing I can say about it.The intro sections (before the questions) were very repetitive. Sometimes they were literally copied and pasted 2 or 3 times within the same section. The same copy-pasting happened between sections, too, with at least one mistake in the text resulting from this. There were many typos that rendered the text flat-out wrong. For example, the quadratic formula was incorrect.The practice questions were abysmal. I got fully HALF of the questions wrong. I started to freak out, and my wife told me to take an official practice test. I did, and missed only 7 questions. I scored even better on the actual GRE. Why did I get so many practice questions wrong? It was a combination of bad questions and bad answers. In some cases, the verbal reasoning answers literally contradicted the passage. Many of the math questions were extremely unrepresentative of the actual GRE. There were questions in this book asking you to calculate the standard deviation of a list of numbers, and one especially ridiculous question that asked me to look at a scatter plot and calculate the variance of the middle two quartiles of the data points. I was like "This seems too complex for a real GRE problem. There must be some trick to it that avoids time-consuming calculations, like assuming the middle quartiles are within +1 and -1 standard deviation." Nope. The answer key went through and calculated the variance. Rather, it tried to; it calculated the sum of the residuals, not the sum of the *squares* of the residuals. It went through so much work, only to get the wrong answer. Other questions were phrased ambiguously like "calculate the average combined speed of two people, one traveling at 30 mi/h and another traveling at 36 mi/h." If you said, "Obviously, it's 33 mi/h," you'd be wrong (according to the book).
So, I decided to start preparing for my GRE exam to apply for my PhD. For a person who was not the best math student at school, it is essential that the language used in the book is easy to understand. This book is what I needed. It explains the steps and hints of the test really well and the language used to explain math is easy to follow.The 3 practice exams were great to take as they helped me figure out my best strategies while taking the real exam.Great book, lots of work put in it.P.S. This book is very supportive. So far did 1 test in the book and found it very useful, as well as one online. Video explanations are super helpful when you stuck with problem.Structure of the book is the following: First goes comprehensive detailed manual. It has the following chapters:Introduction to Analytical Writing, How to Prepare: Analytical Writing, The Analyze an Issue Prompt, The Analyze an Argument Prompt, Introduction to Verbal Reasoning, Reading Comprehension ,Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence Questions, Introduction to Quantitative Reasoning ,Math Primer,Practice Problem Set,QuantitativeComparison, Problem Solving and Data Interpretation, Writing Primer, Analyze an Issue, Analyze an Argument.Followed by two tests. Overall I like this book and will practice more. Good luck to me!
I don't have any other prep books to compare to, but I will say this book is very useful in terms of the guide section and the practice sets along with the two practice tests. My problems all lie within the online prep section. Some sections are "under construction"?, including the practice sets section and at least one of the practice tests (I've done the two in the book and two online).My main problem is that the online tests have some repeat questions that are in the book already! how lazy of them. They're randomly peppered (as in, singular questions and some passages, or sometimes full sections (for the math sections) )The calculator on the online resource is also kinda buggy.Overall an okay book but could use some polish.UPDATE: the online tests are SUPER buggy. holy moly. Timer disappears a lot and the test randomly stops in the middle of sections. I'm on Chrome. This is unacceptable. The most heinous offense is that the "explanations" for the answers (after you finish a test) don't work. That's ridiculous. My rating goes from 4 stars to 2. renders the online tests almost useless.
Just received this test prep book a few days ago and I am pleased to say this is a great test prep book. The online system that comes with this book is very useful because the GRE is a computer administered exam so studying on paper is nice but it does not simulate the real experience. This specific book that I purchased comes with a free online exam and also two included in the book. Challenging problems, some of the questions really had me thinking. Looking forward to completing the entire book.
Purchased 5 of these for my students, excellent prep material. Their workbooks actually come with six total exams, I see four more online which is really great for students looking for extra prep material. Recommend if you are shopping around for more practice.
The best book to study for the exam, in my opinion. I've tried quite many companies (Kaplan, Manhattan Prep, etc) but this one wins hands down. In other books material is very similar while in this one it's more expensive with great explanations to each question. I think it being expensive helped me more to prepare for my exam. Highly recommend!P.S. I'm usually bad in math section but his books helped to train me to be much better in it!
I purchased this at the end of 2017. I tried accessing the promised online content recently only to be told I can't because the 2018 edition is "discontinued". It's 2018. It's not like this is super old. I bought it MOSTLY for the online tests. Argo brothers "generously" offered 20% off on the online content. No thank you, after seeing the quality (or lack of) in the book I'll pass and spend my $ on better study materials.
