For a pocket guide, this is quite thorough. Note that it does not cover any of the cities just beyond Madrid at all. So if you want info on Toledo, etc, then you need the Lonely Planet Madrid full size guide (which we also have). This one is handy for travelling around Madrid.But the one drawback is that many of the recommended spots get a bit busier and touristy after being featured. This is most notable in regards to restaurants. I would cross check with Google+ and Yelp and even Trip Advisor to make sure recent reviews are positive.Overall this is a good guidebook for the main sights and attractions as well as little overviews of neighborhoods and some nice walking routes for sightseeing. Also I recommend the DoubleTree Madrid on the weekends (it's often half the price of the weekday nights).
We spent 5 days in Madrid, and this got us to everything we should have seen. You can carry it in your back pocket. Only one correctiion, Estado Puro, which was mentioned several times for tapas, etc has changed entirely. Now only liquor and a very abbreviated menu that wasn't very good. I guess its prime location right across from the Prado was too expensive for a tapas bar.
Concise and reliable. We had a week in Madrid and passed through most of the areas mentioned. The book touches on the major tourist spots (which I preferred to avoid) but also a few other nice things that are just a touch away from the madding crowd. (Recognizing that the entire central part of Madrid is a tourist zone, you can't really avoid it.) While it's truly pocket size was convenient, at times I wished for a longer, full-size guide that would provide more historical and cultural context for what I was seeing .... hope Lonely Planet will put something out before long.
I have used Lonely Plant Guides for years and have always found them to be very helpful. This Guide provides very useful information in the text but the maps are not coordinated. On the inside cover is a map showing the approximate locations of the neighborhoods but the streets are not labeled and no landmarks are shown, so you can't tell where they are. The big pull-out map in back shows all the streets and major landmarks, but not the neighborhoods or the other places found in the text. The small maps in each chapter are more specific, but without some other reference to their locations on a larger scale, you can't tell where they are. I ended up buying a map of the city to supplement the information in the text.
This book was perfect for our trip to Madrid. As "pocket" implies, it was great to have it in my purse as a handy, quick-reference guide. We found the maps to be accurate and helpful in planning our days. One thing I especially liked about this guide were the food recommendations with every major sight. After walking out of the Reina Sofia Museum we were starving and just walked right into the recommended bistro, which was excellent and did not break the bank.I used to rely on Lonely Planet Guides to find bed & breakfasts and other accommodations. I didn't with this pocket guide. It had a limited selection but in the age of tripadvisor etc. I really wasn't missing this at all.
I went to Madrid with friends and used this as our tour guide. It fits in your back pocket, it has a handy fold out map, and gets you to the top spots in the city. Before using it on the street I recommend getting some tabs to mark the little maps within the book since the large map does not have all the street names and you want to avoid having to dig through the book to find the area you're in. Also keep in mind that it's a pocket guide and limited on information. It'll get you someplace, but to truly find out what the importance of the place is you'll have to supplement with additional reading, or a tour of the place. I strongly recommend it for the casual traveler.
If you want a short travel guide for your Kindle, this is barely acceptable. I bought it because the publisher's description said "Full-colour maps and images throughout"; I'm used to that in the Lonely Planet paper books. Nope, this one has *one* low-res map that is not useful for finding your way between neighborhoods.
Picked up Pocket Madrid in addition to Frommer's Madrid Day by Day right before I left for the trip.Sampled suggestions from both, but found the Pocket guide waaaay cooler, more succinct, and easier to navigate. I plan to purchase these Pocket guides for any future trips.Quite honestly, I had a brilliant time in Madrid because of this guide. Highly recommended.Funny thing, though, you'll see other people at some of the suggested venues with the same guide. Makes for fun conversation.
