Gloria's Voice: The Story of Gloria Steinem―Feminist, Activist, Leader (People Who Shaped Our World), by Aura Lewis

Review

“Lewis portrays the activist as caring and creative, and the message that education, tenacity, and hope will result in realized dreams is clear. . . .This should be considered for picture book biography collections.” —School Library Journal “Debut author-illustrator Lewis focuses on Gloria Steinem’s early life and career. Even in childhood, Steinem understood the limitations imposed upon women: ‘as a wife and mother, Gloria’s mama had to stay home and take care of the family. That’s what women are expected to do.’ Reporting on the women’s liberation movement helps Steinem to find her calling; founding Ms. magazine gives voice to millions: ‘The magazines fly off the newsstands! People want to hear what women have to say.’ Lewis’s watercolor and mixed-media art features glowing rose and tangerine shades, with compositions and fonts that call to mind 1960s-era graphic design. On one surreal spread, Steinem stands triumphantly on the keys of her typewriter, hands on her hips, red hair flowing. Endnotes hint at Steinem’s many more accomplishments. It’s a subtle ode to an iconic figure of quiet ‘strength and enormous influence.’” —Publishers Weekly “This charming picture book is written for trainer-wheels feminists but would make a cool gift for a big girl, too.” —The Toronto Star Online

What a great story with stunning illustrations about Gloria Steinem...I learned so much, and younger readers will be treated to seeing a young Gloria dream about doing big things. Well done!

great book

One if the challenges of having a young child is giving them some historical context to help understand the importance of movements like civil rights, feminism, etc., not just in a historical way, but so that they get a sense of what shaped the adults around them. I love that kids today aren't inclined to self-segregate by sex or race or culture as when I was a kid, but it's not something to be taken for granted. I want my daughter to understand that the world that's open to her today was not always so, and that just because something's obviously moral or fair or right doesn't mean that people always recognized that. Ugh. That's a lot to unpack to a 5-year-old. So mainly I try to explain, earnestly but not heavily, how things were when I was a child, or when my patents or grandparents were children, and how important preserving the advances of today are. Explaining the why is a lot harder, but I figure understanding the past always is helpful. All this to say that this book being written in the present tense made it confusing to read to my daughter. I found myself wanting to change all the historical atereotypes and limitations it presented to past tense as I read them aloud, so as not to confuse her. I couldn't stand reading to her that, or make her think, that women *are* expected to give up their dreams or careeres or that they must have children, etc--but instead, that they *were,* and that making that change of tense is why we so value our feminist activists.Writing in present tense is a thing than I think adults or older children (especially readers of children's classics) would recognize as a literary device, but it made reading this book aloud to my young daughter awkward and uncomfortable--I felt myself repeatedly stopping to clarify that certain standards and ideas were no longer true, or at least no longer entirely true--which you can imagine really bogged down the reading. ;)Anyway, that issue aside, it's beautifully illustrated and simply and honestly written, a lovely book overall. I love children's books that address complicated topics in a simple, elegant way, as this one largely does. And the illustrations vaguely remind me of a modern take on those the little booklets about periods and tampons from the 70s, which I found charmingly nostalgic, and cheekily appropriate.

I really wanted to love this book. As a mother of boys, I want to raise them to be feminists in their own right. Or at least educate them on history and social standards as much as possible, and let them do what they see fit with that information! Books like this have been helpful. This book is very eye-catching and well-made, with lovely illustrations in a mod color scheme. Let's face it - that matters in engaging a young audience. Aesthetically, it gets five stars. The content is where I was left dissatisfied. I think the author tried to cover too much territory and it came off hollow. Nothing was covered in depth and it was unclear what message it was trying to send - Inspire the next generation? Teach about her as a historical figure? I think it would have been better to choose one aspect of her life and explore it in a historical context. Perhaps just adulthood or just childhood? Not sure the answer, but I think the "I Am' book series does this especially well. I highly recommend those - my son will read them over and over. This got a couple reads and was passed on to a friend.

I have mixed feelings about this book. It's written for young children, like early elementary. It doesn't have much detail or context, and I feel like it's maybe a little too shallow with how it treats things. It covers Gloria Steinem's career in journalism up through founding Ms magazine. So, it covers that there aren't these kind of jobs for women, and these were the kind of writing assignments women got, and she wanted it to be a broader range of things women cover and eventually worked up to founding Ms magazine. There isn't any nuance, and there isn't much beyond the illustration style to place this book in a specific time period. And, since she never had kids, there isn't a model in that way of women can do things. I know that's her actual life, but also if you are expected to stay home with kids, well, you are really expected to stay home with kids after you have kids. Statistics on pay and harassment show having kids is a huge disadvantage to a woman's career. This isn't a big pic book about achievement, but is marketed kind of along those lines. I feel like it's marketed somewhat as being about something bigger. Like the blurb about the book says it "brings the message of equality to a new generation", but nope that's not what the book is doing. For a child reading this, it's good as a bio, but just as a bio and not really about teaching how to achieve. The marketing doesn't match the book.Illustrations are great. You can see the cover pic is in a 60s style. It's the same throughout the book. Illustration style matches the era. Lots of bright colors and graphic patterns.

Gloria Steinem did some amazing things in her life. This book seems a little late to the party for children though. While its important to never forget our past and important to remember the struggle women went through and are still going through to this day... this book just seems a little late. It doesnt deal with the issues women face today and instead focuses on issues of 30-50 years ago. Issues that while they still exist and play a part in the struggle, aren't really at the forefront, in my opinion. It seems like perhaps this book was released now in order to capitalize on the equal pay and sexual harassment issues, without really tying it in or giving context to todays issues and those of yesterday. This is well illustrated book about an important and world changing woman--that just seems a little dated and not so relevant to children today.
